The strained relations between India and Canada were once again highlighted this week as Prime Minister Narendra Modi replied to a congratulatory message from his Canadian counterpart, Justin Trudeau. Modi expressed that New Delhi looks forward to fostering relations based on mutual understanding and respect for each other's concerns.

Relations between the two nations hit a rough patch last September when Trudeau accused Indian agents of being potentially involved in the assassination of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, allegations that New Delhi dismissed as absurd. Following these accusations, India requested that Canada reduce its diplomatic presence in the country, leading to the withdrawal of 41 Canadian diplomats and their families.

Trudeau, in his message, stated Canada's readiness to collaborate with India, provided it aligns with human rights, diversity, and the rule of law. Meanwhile, the investigation into Nijjar's murder is being conducted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
