Engineer Rashid Cleared by NIA to Take Oath as MP

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has approved jailed Kashmiri leader Engineer Sheikh Abdul Rashid's request to take his parliamentary oath on July 5. Rashid, currently in Tihar jail over a 2017 terror funding charge, sought interim bail or custody parole to fulfill his parliamentary duties.

Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh will rule on the plea on Tuesday. Rashid, the elected MP from Baramulla, had earlier faced adjournments after moving the court for this purpose. The NIA's counsel has set conditions, including a restriction on media interactions and a one-day time frame to complete the oath-taking process.

Rashid has been detained since 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for alleged involvement in a terror funding case. The court's decision will determine whether he can momentarily leave Tihar jail to perform his parliamentary functions.
