U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval on Friday, the Indian Government reported. This follows concerns raised by the U.S. about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During the call, Sullivan and Doval discussed a range of bilateral, regional, and international issues, according to a statement from India’s foreign ministry. Notably absent from the discussion, according to the release, was Modi’s recent trip to Russia, where he expressed pain over civilian casualties while urging negotiations over military action.

Despite reports of disagreement between Modi and Putin, officials from both countries have denied any rifts. Sullivan and Doval agreed to collaborate closely to advance India-U.S. relations, focusing on shared values and common strategic interests. This dialogue comes in the context of the U.S. seeking to deepen ties with India to counterbalance China’s rising influence, despite India’s longstanding relationship with Russia.
