Justices Nongmeikapam Kotiswar Singh and R Mahadevan were elevated to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, restoring the apex court's sanctioned strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice.
Justice Kotiswar Singh, Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, becomes the first judge from Manipur to join the Supreme Court, providing much-needed representation to the North-East region. He has had a distinguished career, originating from Manipur and serving in various capacities, including as a judge of the Gauhati High Court since October 2011, and playing a pivotal role in the Manipur High Court since its formation.
Justice R Mahadevan, currently the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, also joins the esteemed bench. His elevation is significant as he hails from a backward community in Tamil Nadu, addressing the need for diversity in the Supreme Court. The Collegium underscored his seniority and contributions while recommending his name for elevation.
In related appointments, Justice Tashi Rabstan will serve as the acting Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, and Justice D Krishnakumar will take on the role of acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, following the elevations of Justices Singh and Mahadevan, respectively.
