Spike in Harassment Complaints Highlighted by Goa Women's Commission
The Goa State Commission for Women reported 154 complaints of women in distress during 2023, a notable increase from previous years. So far in 2024, 29 complaints have been recorded. The Goa State Commission for Women reported receiving 154 complaints of women in distress during 2023, while 29 complaints have been recorded so far this year, the legislative assembly was informed on Thursday.
State Women and Child Development Minister Vishwajit Rane tabled the data in the House, revealing that most complaints concern harassment by neighbors or property disputes. Complaints also include issues related to extra-marital affairs or divorce.
The commission received 116 complaints in 2020, 166 in 2021, 88 in 2022, and 154 in 2023. Thus far in 2024, 29 complaints have been registered. In 2023, 52 complaints involved harassment by neighbors or property matters, and nine such complaints were filed this year. Additionally, the commission recorded 12 complaints related to extra-marital affairs or divorce last year, and one such complaint in 2024.
The commission has also been receiving complaints about the harassment of senior citizens or parents, reported Rane. In 2023, ten such cases were reported, with two cases recorded so far this year.
