Russia's Defence Ministry reported on Sunday that Russian warplanes intercepted two U.S. strategic bombers attempting to approach the state border over the Barents Sea.
The military detected an air target nearing Russian borders, prompting the scramble of MiG-29 and MiG-31 fighter jets. These jets identified the approaching aircraft as two U.S. B-52H strategic bombers. Upon the Russian jets' approach, the American bombers altered their course and retreated from Russian airspace.
According to the ministry, the Russian warplanes adhered to international regulations for airspace use over neutral waters. The Pentagon has not yet responded to Reuters' request for comment made outside regular business hours. Similar incidents have been reported previously, highlighting the ongoing tension over the war in Ukraine.
