In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court on Tuesday granted bail to Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal, apprehended by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with a cattle smuggling case.

The bench, comprising Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma, considered the prolonged trial period and Mondal’s two-year custody as key reasons for granting the bail.

Nevertheless, Mondal will continue to remain in jail following a subsequent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in November 2022 over the same case.
