Qatar's PM Warns of Mediation Threat After Hamas Leader's Assassination
The Qatari Prime Minister has expressed concerns that the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh may undermine peace efforts in Gaza. He questioned the feasibility of mediation when one party targets the negotiator of the other side. Qatar condemned the killing, fearing increased regional tension.
The Prime Minister of Qatar has raised concerns that the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh might jeopardize ongoing peace efforts in Gaza.
On Wednesday, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani wrote on X highlighting the futility of mediation when one side carries out targeted killings. He emphasized, 'Peace needs serious partners & a global stance against the disregard for human life.'
Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, has tried to secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Israeli forces have killed over 39,000 Palestinians since October, in response to an attack that killed 1,200 Israelis. Negotiations have been complicated by Israeli demands, Reuters reported.
Haniyeh, who lived primarily in Qatar, was assassinated in Iran, an act condemned by Qatar as a dangerous escalation.
