The 'Closing the Gap' report, released after a failed 2023 referendum to officially recognize Indigenous people in the constitution, highlighted increased imprisonment and suicide rates and more Aboriginal children in out-of-home care.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese acknowledged past failures but emphasized the government's commitment to making a lasting difference despite generational challenges. The report also noted the absence of reliable data on critical metrics such as access to clean water, sewerage treatment, and electricity for Indigenous communities.
