In a disturbing incident from Maharashtra's Thane district, a couple allegedly gave their newborn girl to a transgender person, suspecting she belonged to the third gender, according to police reports on Thursday.
Authorities acted upon a complaint lodged by a doctor from the hospital where the child was born, registering a case on Wednesday against the parents from Dwarli village on charges of abandoning the baby, as per an official from Mahatma Phule Chowk police station in Kalyan.
The official noted that the woman delivered the baby girl on May 27. Medical examinations revealed certain abnormalities, prompting doctors to refer her to specialists. However, the parents refused further medical checks. Despite continuous efforts from doctors and village elders, the couple handed over the infant to a transgender person eight days post-delivery. The baby remains under the transgender person's care, who has declined to return her despite the complainant doctor's willingness to adopt and provide medical treatment.
