More than 2.16 lakh Indians renounced their citizenship in 2023, the government revealed to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs, provided this information in a written response to queries about citizenship renunciations over the last five years.

Singh shared data showing varying numbers for citizenship renunciations: 2,25,620 in 2022; 1,63,370 in 2021; 85,256 in 2020; and 1,44,017 in 2019.

When questioned by AAP member Raghav Chadha about the reasons for high renunciation rates and possible 'financial and intellectual drainage,' Singh emphasized that such decisions were personal.

He highlighted the significant role of the Indian diaspora, noting that a 'successful, prosperous, and influential diaspora' is an asset to India. The government's strategy includes tapping into the diaspora's networks and soft power, aiming for productive utilization through knowledge and expertise sharing.
