A senior Army officer who coordinated rescue efforts in landslide-ravaged Wayanad, Kerala, has said the operation was the largest he had participated in since the devastating 1999 Odisha cyclone.

On Monday, Wayanad district authorities stated that Major General V T Mathew, who led the rescue operations in Chooralmala and Mundakkai areas, has returned to the Kerala-Karnataka Headquarters in Bengaluru after facilitating the rescue of hundreds affected by the July 30 disaster.

District Collector D R Meghashree bid farewell to the Major General, conveying the state's deep gratitude and respect. Mathew, the General Officer Commanding of Kerala-Karnataka, expressed satisfaction over the successful operation despite challenging weather and terrain. He noted the high risk involved in initial rescue efforts and shared the collective grief of the Army over the loss of lives.
