DMK candidate K Ramakrishnan, also known as 'Kittu,' secured victory as the new Mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation on Monday.

He received 30 votes in the 55-member council during the indirect elections, surpassing his rival and former colleague Paulraj, who managed to secure 23 votes. One vote was discarded, while opposition AIADMK councillor Jeganathan refrained from voting.

Former Mayor P M Saravanan, who stepped down in July, arrived late for the vote but was permitted to cast his ballot after explaining the delay to the returning officer, an official confirmed.

Ramakrishnan, known for his simplicity, rode his bicycle to file his nomination. Speaking to reporters post-election, he vowed to prioritize upgrades to the Tirunelveli corporation.
