The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the West Bengal government and the state's police chief concerning the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Commission said it has asked for detailed reports from these authorities within two weeks.
The NHRC took suo motu cognisance of media reports indicating that the junior doctor was found dead in the hospital's seminar hall with scratch marks, pointing to a possible struggle. The family has alleged that the victim was raped and murdered.
The NHRC expressed grave concern over the potential human rights violation, requesting detailed reports from the chief secretary and the director general of police, West Bengal. The report is expected to cover the current investigation status, actions against the responsible parties, and any compensation given to the victim's family.
The Commission also seeks information on measures taken or proposed to prevent such incidents in the future.
