Gaza Ceasefire: Iran's Strategic Calculations Amid Tensions
Senior Iranian officials say that only a Gaza ceasefire deal, expected from talks this week, can prevent Iran from directly retaliating against Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Iran has engaged in intense dialogue with Western countries to calibrate its response while considering sending a representative to the ceasefire talks.
Senior Iranian officials have stated that a ceasefire deal in Gaza, anticipated from talks this week, is the only measure that could hold Iran back from launching direct retaliation against Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Iran has vowed a severe response to the killing, which it blames on Israel, though Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.
The U.S. Navy has bolstered Israeli defenses by deploying warships and a submarine to the Middle East. According to a senior Iranian security official, Iran and its allies, such as Hezbollah, will directly attack if the Gaza talks fail or if it perceives Israel to be stalling. There is an increased risk of a broader Middle East conflict following the killings of Haniyeh and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr.
Iran has engaged in intense dialogue with Western countries and the U.S. to calibrate its response, with discussions involving potential diplomatic communication channels during the ceasefire talks. Iran is considering sending a representative to the talks for behind-the-scenes discussions. The outcome of these talks could significantly impact regional stability.
