The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday extended the tenure of chiefs of municipal councils or Nagar Parishads in the state from two-and-a-half years to five years. This decision aims to provide more stability and long-term planning for local governance.

The cabinet also approved a funding of Rs 149 crore to improve the milk business in Marathwada and Vidarbha. Measures to increase cattle numbers and optimize fodder supply will be implemented to support this initiative.

In another move, retired professors at medical colleges will be hired on a fixed honorarium instead of temporary contracts. Professors and assistant professors will receive Rs 1.85 lakh and Rs 1.70 lakh respectively, with those teaching in remote areas earning slightly higher. The state also extended medical benefits to teaching and non-teaching staff at three deemed universities, aligning them with government-aided college staff.
