The CBI on Tuesday assumed control of the investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at a state-run medical college in Kolkata, in compliance with a Calcutta High Court directive.
The agency completed the necessary formalities swiftly, as the High Court mandated that the state police transfer all case documents to the central probe agency.
A CBI team from Delhi, including forensic scientists and medical experts, is scheduled to visit Kolkata on Wednesday to advance the investigation.
Earlier, the High Court ordered the state police to hand over the case diary to the CBI by 10 AM on Wednesday.
Tragically, the body of the postgraduate trainee doctor, allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College, was discovered on Friday morning. A civic volunteer was detained in connection to the case on Saturday.
The preliminary autopsy indicated signs of sexual abuse and murder, with the victim suffering from bleeding in several areas and multiple injuries.
Kolkata Police arrested a 33-year-old suspect who had joined as a civic volunteer in 2019. He was alleged to have been married several times and had a reputation for being a 'womaniser.'
The accused, also a trained boxer, had connections with senior police officers and was subsequently assigned to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board, later stationed at RG Kar Medical College where the crime occurred.
