Kim Jong Un Reaffirms Ties with Russia Amid Liberation Day Celebrations
Kim Jong Un pledged to deepen North Korea's cooperation with Russia during a message to Vladimir Putin, marking Korea's liberation from Japan. The message strengthened their strategic partnership, evidenced by recent summits and agreements. The bond, initially forged in shared military struggles, faces scrutiny amid accusations of North Korea aiding Russia in the Ukraine conflict.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening ties with Russia in a recent message to President Vladimir Putin. This pledge coincided with North Korea celebrating its independence from Japan's colonial rule, as reported by the KCNA state news agency on Friday.
The message was a response to Putin's congratulatory note on the Aug. 15 liberation day anniversary. Putin emphasized that the bond established between their nations during struggles against Japan continues to underpin their relations, according to KCNA.
In his message, Kim highlighted that the historical camaraderie between their armies and peoples has evolved into a 'comprehensive strategic partnership and invincible comradeship.' Both leaders held a summit in Pyongyang in June, solidifying this partnership, which includes a mutual defense agreement.
