The Calcutta High Court has granted the West Bengal BJP permission to stage a five-day demonstration near Shyambazar metro station in Kolkata, starting August 21. The protest is in response to the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The state's counsel argued for a one-day sit-in, expressing concerns over public inconvenience. However, the BJP's lawyer sought a six-day demonstration.
After considering both sides, Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj approved the five-day protest with up to 300 participants, scheduled from 12 noon to 9 pm Wednesday through Sunday. The incident has sparked nationwide protests among medics, demanding justice for the victim and better workplace security legislation. The CBI has taken over the investigation following a Calcutta High Court order, leading to the arrest of a civic volunteer suspected to be involved in the crime.
