The Philippines and China engaged in a confrontation in the South China Sea over a resupply mission for Filipino fishermen, highlighting ongoing tensions. The clash included dangerous maneuvers and the use of water cannons by Chinese vessels. Both nations have experienced frequent maritime disputes, impacting regional security and bilateral relations.
The Philippines and China clashed in the South China Sea on Sunday amid a resupply mission for Filipino fishermen. Fresh confrontations in the strategic waters complicate efforts by both nations to rebuild trust after months of maritime disputes, including a violent June incident where a Filipino sailor lost a finger.
On Sunday, Manila accused China of "aggressive and dangerous maneuvers" to block the resupply. China’s coast guard claimed to have taken "control measures" against a vessel that had "illegally" entered the disputed waters near Sabina Shoal and approached Chinese ships recklessly.
The Philippines' task force reported that Chinese vessels rammed and used water cannons against a Philippine Bureau of Fisheries ship, stalling its engine and ending the mission. U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson condemned China's actions as unsafe, unlawful, and aggressive.
