Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered an investigation into the death of Mohammad Mir Mousavi, a man reportedly tortured to death while in police custody in the north of the country.
Pezeshkian, elected last month, promised to put an end to deaths in custody. The case also recalls the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, which led to widespread protests. Five police officers have been temporarily detained pending the investigation.
Human rights group Hengaw alleges that Mousavi was severely beaten and has published graphic evidence suggesting torture. Activists warn that this incident may exacerbate inter-communal tensions in Iran.
