Tragic Highway Accident in Oaxaca: Three Migrants Dead, Seventeen Injured
Three migrants, including a father and daughter from Nicaragua and a woman from Ecuador, were killed, and 17 others were injured when they were struck by a vehicle on a highway in Oaxaca, Mexico. The accident occurred pre-dawn as migrants walked to avoid daytime heat. The driver has been detained.
In a tragic incident early Thursday, three migrants lost their lives and 17 were injured when a vehicle struck them on a highway in Mexico's southern state of Oaxaca, according to local authorities.
The Oaxaca state prosecutors identified two of the deceased as a father and his 8-year-old daughter from Nicaragua. Another fatality was a woman hailing from Ecuador. Details about the condition of the injured have yet to be released.
Oaxaca is a frequent route for migrants aiming to cross Mexico toward the US border. Pre-dawn walks are common to avoid the intense daytime heat, although such journeys often result in accidents. Criticism has been directed at local police for not providing protective escorts, a measure occasionally put in place for large migrant groups.
