New Zealand's Annual Security Report Highlights Complex Threats
New Zealand has identified China as a complex intelligence concern, but also notes interference from other states. The NZSIS annual report highlights foreign interference and the challenges faced globally. China responded by emphasizing its commitment to non-interference and mutual respect in international relations.
New Zealand has flagged China as a 'complex intelligence concern' in its latest annual report on the country's threat landscape, but highlighted that it is not the only nation engaged in malicious activities. The New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) revealed these findings on Tuesday.
The NZSIS further stated that conclusively linking interference to specific states can be challenging. It emphasized that the threat of foreign interference is a global issue, with many countries worldwide facing similar challenges from illiberal states attempting to exploit their openness or size.
In response, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson reiterated China's commitment to non-interference and mutual respect in international relations. The spokesperson urged New Zealand to maintain a rational perspective to foster stable bilateral relations.
The report, titled 'New Zealand's Security Threat Environment,' aims to better inform citizens about national threats without causing undue alarm. Director-General of Security Andrew Hampton affirmed that the goal is to provide a transparent assessment of national security realities.
