Controversial Sanctions Team Faces North Korea's Backlash

North Korea has openly criticized the formation of a new multilateral sanctions monitoring team spearheaded by the United States, denouncing it as 'utterly unlawful and illegitimate,' according to state media on Sunday.

The United States, in collaboration with South Korea and Japan, recently launched this multinational team following interference by Russia and China that thwarted monitoring efforts at the United Nations. The initiative emerged after Russia rejected the renewal of a U.N. panel of experts responsible for oversight of sanctions targeting North Korea’s nuclear and missile developments, with China abstaining from the vote.

In a statement via the KCNA news agency, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui warned of repercussions for those leading the 'smear campaign' against the DPRK. Choe condemned the U.S.-led team's actions as violations of international order and sovereignty. Controversially, it's reported that North Korea has deployed troops to Russia amid potential combat deployment in Ukraine, a claim skeptical but concerning to U.S. officials.
