The Philippines is ramping up its defense capabilities, seeking to acquire more military hardware including additional BrahMos missiles from India and at least two submarines, as articulated by the armed forces chief on Wednesday.
Enter phase three of its 'Horizons' modernization program, the country has allocated $35 billion over the upcoming decade to address the growing threat of China's military prowess. Acquiring submarines, which is a top priority according to armed forces chief Brawner, is crucial for the archipelago's defense strategy.
In light of increasing tensions with China, particularly in the South China Sea, the Philippines is also pursuing mid-range missiles and more fighter jets. Presently, a strategic partnership with South Korea also promises the delivery of two corvette vessels this year to bolster maritime security. Military cooperation with allies, including the US and Canada, highlights the Philippines' strategic intent.
