In a landmark verdict, Rishi Kumar has been sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for driving under the influence, resulting in the death of two individuals and injuries to ten others. The incident occurred over a decade ago near Nigam Bodh Ghat, where the victims were asleep on a pavement.
The court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Virender Kumar Kharta, found Kumar guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicle Act. The judge highlighted that footpaths are not intended for vehicular traffic, and Kumar's actions were reckless, with full awareness of potential fatal outcomes.
Despite mitigation pleas citing Kumar's young age and unmarried status, the court emphasized the severity of the offense and the trauma suffered by the victims. Alongside imprisonment, Kumar has been ordered to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation to the victims' families, with additional claims referred to the Delhi State Legal Services Authority.
