Australia has sounded alarms over perceived 'unsafe and unprofessional' maneuvers by a Chinese fighter jet aimed at an Australian patrol aircraft operating in the South China Sea earlier this week. The dispute has since triggered a terse response from Beijing.

According to Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles, a Royal Australian Air Force Poseidon P-8A was on a routine patrol when a PLA J-16 jet dangerously discharged flares close to the Australian aircraft. In response, Australia has initiated dialogues with the Chinese government to voice its apprehensions both domestically and abroad in Beijing.

China's foreign ministry retorted by blaming the Australian aircraft for intentionally entering its airspace and compromising its national security. The ministry defended its actions as lawful and measured, while Australia accused China of disregarding international law, further heightening tension in the geopolitically sensitive region.
