EU Exerts Pressure on Rwanda Over Congo Conflict

The European Parliament calls on the EU to halt budget support for Rwanda until it severs ties with M23 rebels in Congo. The resolution aims to pressure the EU to act against Rwanda's alleged involvement, with concerns over Congo's mineral resources and regional stability anchoring the call.

On Thursday, the European Parliament called for the European Union to suspend direct budgetary support for Rwanda. This move demands that Rwanda cease connections with the Tutsi-led M23 rebels and facilitate humanitarian access in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Parliament's resolution, adopted by a 443-4 vote with 48 abstentions, emphasizes the gravity of the situation, highlighting the occupation of Goma and other eastern DRC territories by M23 rebels. These actions are condemned as a breach of DRC's sovereignty. Despite not being binding, the resolution amplifies pressure on the European Commission and EU member states.

The conflict, enriched by Congo's mineral wealth, raises concern about a regional war. Accusations target Rwanda for allegedly supporting M23 with troops and weapons, claims Kigali denies. The Rwandan ambassador refuted these claims before a European Parliament panel, stressing Rwanda's non-responsibility for the conflict's resolution.
