The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking a response on the bail plea of Partha Chatterjee, a former West Bengal minister embroiled in corruption charges linked to a cash-for-jobs scandal.
Chatterjee’s legal representative, M. S. Khan, highlighted that Chatterjee has spent over two years in custody without trial progression. The court scheduled the next hearing for March 20, seeking further insights from the CBI on the case which also involves money laundering allegations.
Previously, the court granted Chatterjee conditional bail concerning the money laundering charges, clarifying he must refrain from holding any public position, though he may remain an assembly member during the trial. In this multifaceted legal battle, Chatterjee faces a plethora of accusations, including involvement in a racket that facilitated illegal appointments within the education department.
