Diplomatic Push for Peace: U.S., Kenya Call for Congo Ceasefire

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Kenyan President William Ruto have jointly called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This conflict is marked by the advancement of M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, and involves struggles over mineral resources. Diplomatic efforts are in motion to resolve the crisis.

In a recent development, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Kenyan President William Ruto have appealed for an immediate ceasefire in the turbulent eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This appeal comes amid escalating tensions as M23 rebels, allegedly supported by Rwanda, gain ground, capturing key cities.

The conflict, reignited by the spillover of Rwanda's 1994 genocide and the scramble for Congo's mineral wealth, has worsened over the past decade. Despite accusations from Congo, the United Nations, and Western nations, Rwanda denies supplying arms and troops to M23.

In light of these allegations, the United States recently imposed sanctions on a Rwandan government minister and an armed group leader, urging the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from Congo. Rubio and Ruto remain committed to seeking a peaceful diplomatic resolution to the crisis.
