Coast Guard efforts to enhance maritime safety were highlighted during a recent international course on MRCC Operations and Search and Rescue (SAR). V Anbarasan, Chief of Staff of Coast Guard Region (West), stressed the importance of international collaboration at the event, emphasizing that synergy among nations serves the global humanitarian cause of ensuring mariners' safety.
The MRCC OPS & SAR course, held in Mumbai, attracted 22 participants from Bangladesh, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Seychelles, and Sri Lanka. The curriculum offered insights into SAR planning, coordination, data computation, search plan development, satellite-aided operations, and involved practical experience at local facilities.
Since its inception in 2021, the course has grown, with this year's cohort being the largest yet. The MRCC in Mumbai operates around the clock to manage SAR activities, having responded to over 2,100 alerts in 2024 alone. Recent operations extended beyond Indian waters, showcasing the active role of Coast Guard ships in regional rescues.
