The latest update from the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission reveals a significant increase in the National Infrastructure Pipeline, with the total value of projects reaching $204 billion. This marks a substantial rise of $60.4 billion since the last quarter, demonstrating a strong commitment to national development, Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop announced.

Robust Infrastructure Growth

The Pipeline, which provides a comprehensive view of infrastructure projects across the country, encompasses roads, water infrastructure, schools, and more. The December 2024 update highlights over 1,500 projects currently under construction, valued at $48.6 billion. Additionally, projects with confirmed funding have risen by $8.1 billion from the previous quarter, now totaling $107.9 billion.

Minister Bishop emphasized the positive impact of this growth: "A strong pipeline of infrastructure projects means a growing economy, more jobs, and increased opportunities for Kiwis."

Economic Contributions and Sector Highlights

Infrastructure spending in 2025 is projected to exceed $15.1 billion, accounting for approximately 3.6% of New Zealand's GDP. The transport sector remains the largest investment area, receiving $7.7 billion—about 51% of the total infrastructure budget for the year.

The Commission continues to enhance the transparency and quality of available infrastructure data, ensuring stakeholders can make informed decisions. The Pipeline now tracks more than 7,600 projects in various stages of development, involving 147 contributing organizations.

Expanding Participation and Future Outlook

The number of organizations contributing to the Pipeline has grown to 108, including central government, local government, and private sector entities. In December, eleven additional councils joined, bringing the total to 59. Minister Bishop encouraged further participation, stating, "Local government plays a crucial role in infrastructure development. I urge remaining councils and infrastructure providers to engage with the Commission to strengthen our national infrastructure strategy."

The value of projects within the Pipeline will continue to fluctuate as projects reach completion, new plans are introduced, and organizations refine their submissions. This ongoing evolution ensures that New Zealand remains on a path of sustainable development, fostering economic resilience and long-term growth.
