In a significant development, Hamas handed over the remains of four hostages to Israel early Thursday, while Israel reciprocated by releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. This move forms part of a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
The exchange marks the conclusion of the first phase of the ceasefire, set to end this weekend. However, both Israel and Hamas are yet to negotiate further stages, raising concerns about the potential resumption of hostilities with numerous hostages still retained in Gaza.
Throughout this phase, 33 Israelis regained freedom, although eight lost their lives during captivity or the October 7 attack that ignited the conflict. In a separate exchange, five Thai hostages were also released. The tragic conflict has had devastating effects, as per Gaza's Health Ministry, which reports over 48,000 Palestinian fatalities, primarily among women and children.
