Prominent Journalist Jose Zamora Ordered Back to Jail Amid Allegations of Political Persecution

A Guatemalan judge has ordered journalist Jose Zamora back to jail over money laundering charges, despite labeling his detention as politically motivated. This follows his previous 800-day incarceration, during which his newspaper exposed major corruption. An appeals court overturned his conviction, but his re-trial is set for 2025.

Prominent Journalist Jose Zamora Ordered Back to Jail Amid Allegations of Political Persecution

In a controversial decision, a Guatemalan judge ordered renowned journalist Jose Zamora back to jail on Monday, citing money laundering charges viewed by many as politically charged. The order comes after a higher court revoked a prior decision allowing house arrest for Zamora, who had already spent 800 days incarcerated.

Labeling the ruling as 'arbitrary,' Zamora argued during his court appearance that the judge had been left with no alternative. The judge himself claimed threats had been made against him and his staff, though he declined to offer specifics. Despite appeals delaying the ruling's enactment, the higher court's decision from last November now stands.

Zamora, convicted in 2023 and sentenced to six years, saw his conviction overturned, awaiting a new trial in 2025. His newspaper, elPeriodico, is known for exposing corruption across various Guatemalan administrations. Notably, Zamora had criticized then-President Alejandro Giammattei just before his initial arrest. The current Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, has overseen the prosecution, despite facing accusations of corruption herself.
