On February 21, President Trump issued an executive order to prevent transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women's sports, a move opposed by Governor Mills. During a meeting at the White House, Trump warned that lack of compliance might jeopardize federal funding. Mills responded defiantly, indicating a readiness to challenge the order in court.

A subsequent investigation was launched by the USDA to determine the university's adherence to federal law regarding sex discrimination. The university has since confirmed compliance with both state and federal laws and NCAA policies, emphasizing that their athlete programs are in line with legal standards.
