Soldier Saga: Lebanon's Diplomatic Victory with Israel
Lebanon successfully secures the return of a soldier detained by Israel. This follows Israel's release of five Lebanese individuals, including four detained during the last conflict. The exchange results from indirect negotiations amid ongoing tensions and a truce deal reached between the two nations in November.
The Lebanese army announced the return of a soldier detained by Israel since Sunday, as the army declared in a post on X.
In a gesture to Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Israel released five detained Lebanese, four of whom were captured during the last war. Aoun confirmed the fifth's release post indirect negotiations.
The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the soldier's return; he was taken to a hospital for treatment. Though not identified, he had approached the border in civilian attire and was shot by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon.
Israel reported firing at and evacuating the suspect to a hospital. On Tuesday, Lebanon received four other Lebanese citizens detained by Israel, unrelated to the army.
This exchange surfaces amid improved relations post a U.S.-brokered truce in November, following a year-long conflict between Israel's forces and Hezbollah.
