Lithuanian rescuers intensified efforts on Thursday to recover a vehicle submerged in a peat bog at a military training area along with four U.S. soldiers who have been missing for two days. The M88 Hercules armoured recovery vehicle, engaged in an exercise at the Pabrade training ground near the Belarus border, was found over five meters deep in waterlogged terrain.

Defence Minister Dovile Sakaliene announced that enough water had been drained from the swamp, allowing excavation to begin. Hundreds of Lithuanian and U.S. soldiers, along with numerous vehicles, are committed to the recovery operation, underscoring the deep military ties between the nations. Lithuanian army head Raimundas Vaiksnoras emphasized the importance of the mission, stating, "To us, their soldiers are like our soldiers."

Meanwhile, Lithuanian Foreign Affairs Minister Kestutis Budrys assured U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington of Lithuania's readiness to host additional U.S. troops, affirming the ongoing strategic partnership. The military cooperation highlights a strong commitment to bilateral relations in regional security efforts.
