Speaking during the budget session, Goyal detailed the indiscriminate disposal of waste impacting both urban and rural areas, posing a major threat to water quality. With canal water crucial for irrigation and drinking, the gravity of the situation is amplified. In response, the water resources department has pinpointed 492 pollution areas, having already eliminated 444. The remaining spots are undergoing targeted interventions.

Measures include imposing legal fines, filing FIRs against perpetrators, and recommending disciplinary actions against negligent officials. The installation of wire mesh barriers, like those in Ludhiana, aims to curb direct waste disposal into canals. Ramps leading into canals are also being restricted to prevent dumping and potential hazards.
