Indian security forces reported a significant operation in Chhattisgarh on Saturday, where at least 16 Maoist rebels were killed in a fierce gunfight. This clash is the latest in a decades-long conflict waged by the extreme left-wing rebels against the government, particularly in central and eastern India.

The encounter occurred in Sukma, southern Chhattisgarh, during a search operation that uncovered various firearms. The Maoist rebels claim they are fighting to empower poor farmers and landless laborers, advocating for more control over their land and the mineral wealth exploited by large mining corporations.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah has vowed to end this insurgency, escalating the confrontation since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term commenced last year. The ongoing conflict continues to result in significant casualties and heightened tensions.
