Supreme Court Halts Dargah Demolition in Thane

The Supreme Court has ordered a week-long status quo on the demolition of a dargah in Thane. The Court directed the trust managing the shrine to move the Bombay High Court to recall a previous demolition order, citing overlooked facts within a civil suit.

The Supreme Court intervened to halt the demolition of a dargah in Thane, issuing a week's stay on the order. The Court's bench, comprising Justices Sandeep Mehta and Prasanna B Varale, instructed the trust overseeing the shrine to approach the Bombay High Court to recall the previous demolition order.

The directive comes after a plea by the trust challenged the March 10 high court order, which demanded the demolition of unauthorised sections of the shrine. The trust argued that crucial facts from a dismissed civil suit in April 2025 were not considered in the earlier ruling.

The bench acknowledged the oversight, allowing the trust to seek a recall of the order. If unsuccessful at the high court, the trust is permitted to appeal to the Supreme Court again, securing temporary protection for the shrine.
