Reviving Tradition: Pakistan's Initiative to Restore Jirga System

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sanctioned the creation of an 18-member committee to rejuvenate the traditional Jirga system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This initiative aims to provide a culturally relevant, community-based conflict resolution alternative, relieving stress on the formal judicial system and aligning with local customs.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the formation of a high-level committee tasked with reviving the traditional Jirga system in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

In a move aimed at offering an effective dispute resolution alternative in sync with local traditions, the 18-member team will evaluate and propose measures to restore the Jirga system. This development seeks to integrate culturally significant practices within the community while easing the burden on the formal judiciary.

The committee will be led by Federal Minister Ameer Muqam as Convener, with Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, Federal Minister for Law and Justice, acting as Co-convener. Noteworthy members include Federal Ministers Iqbal Chaudhary and Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi.
