In a significant operation, police in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district seized a large cache of weapons and ammunition on Monday. A flat in Rahara, near Kolkata, was raided, leading to the discovery of 16 firearms and 904 rounds of ammunition, according to Barrackpore Police Commissionerate's Detective Department.
Madhusudan Mukherjee, a man allegedly linked to the flat, was arrested. Known for posing as a cloth merchant, Mukherjee also had cash, gold, and antique coins in his possession. Deputy Commissioner of Police Charu Sharma revealed details of the weaponry seized, including various rifles and pistols.
The police are now focusing on understanding the sourcing and intended distribution pathways of these arms. Mukherjee, with a history of legal troubles under the Arms and NDPS Acts, was previously known to have driven rented police vehicles. The investigation continues with the potential for more arrests.
