West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday criticized the Election Commission's decision to suspend four officers, including two state civil servants. These suspensions were ordered due to alleged failures in preparing electoral rolls in two districts.
In response to Tuesday's directive from the EC, which included lodging FIRs against the officers and a data entry operator, Banerjee argued that the EC only holds authority from the announcement of elections. This action comes as a political debate unfolds over a possible special intensive revision of electoral rolls akin to Bihar's recent update.
Banerjee maintains her government's support for the accused officers, questioning the legitimacy of the suspensions under existing laws. She suggested the moves could be an attempt to force NRC policies through the backdoor under the guise of electoral roll revision.
