Two Punjab police commandos have come under fire after being suspended for their alleged involvement in the assault of a local journalist. The incident, which has been captured on a viral video, has sparked widespread outrage and prompted serious questions about police conduct in the region.
The video footage shows the two officers, Sub-Inspectors Surjit and Mandeep Singh, forcefully dragging and assaulting the journalist Balwinder Singh on a bustling street. The situation escalated when one of the officers, dressed in uniform, kicked Singh to the ground, leaving him motionless in a puddle while they casually walked away.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar, the assault took place on August 1. Singh's questioning of the officers about their duty in Batala led to a heated exchange, resulting in the attack. A First Information Report (FIR) was filed on August 2 following the journalist's complaint, leading to the suspension of the officers.
