China has escalated its trade tensions with Canada by initiating dispute consultations at the World Trade Organization. This move targets Canadian surtaxes and quotas on steel and aluminum products, the WTO confirmed on Wednesday.
At the core of the disagreement are Canadian-imposed surtaxes in the form of tariff rate quotas specifically affecting steel imports from nations without free trade agreements with Canada, noticeably impacting Chinese exports.
Additionally, China is challenging Canada's application of similar surtaxes on certain steel or aluminum-based goods originating from China. The issue is now under the purview of the WTO's dispute resolution framework.
