Maharashtra's Crime Patterns in 2023: A Focus on Environmental Offences
Maharashtra saw a decline in 'Offences Against the State' in 2023, with the state ranking seventh nationwide. However, environmental offences significantly increased, totaling 4,854 cases. Uttar Pradesh led in state offences, while Tamil Nadu topped environmental violations. Strong charge sheet filing was observed in nearly all cases.

Maharashtra witnessed a decrease in 'Offences Against the State' in 2023 compared to previous years, as reported by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state registered 169 cases, a drop from 174 in 2022 and 218 in 2021, placing it seventh in the country.
Uttar Pradesh led this category with 1,749 incidents. These include public property damage and sedition, followed by Tamil Nadu with 834 cases and Assam with 278 cases. Maharashtra reported one sedition case, alongside three cases blemishing national integration.
However, the state saw a surge in environment-related crimes with 4,854 cases in 2023, ranking fourth nationwide. Most cases were under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act. Tamil Nadu led with 41,304 cases. Almost all cases were charge-sheeted, illustrating efficient legal actions.
