Australia's Fitzroy River has cleared technical hurdles, bringing it closer to hosting rowing and canoeing events at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, according to domestic media reports.

Known for its strong tides and crocodile population, the proposal to use this river some 600 km north of Brisbane was met with mixed reactions when first announced in March. However, Queensland state lawmaker Matt Canavan reported to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the river has passed initial testing by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority.

According to Canavan, the results indicate no impediments to using the river for Olympic events, including canoe sprints. The government plans to present these findings to the global federation World Rowing, using data on water flows and depths to substantiate the river's suitability.
