Zelenskiy's Swedish Mission: Discussing Gripen Jet Export Deal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy visited Sweden to discuss a potential export deal with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, focusing on Saab's Gripen fighter jet. While donating the jets to Ukraine isn't on the table, the visit highlights potential long-term defense collaborations amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy arrived in Sweden for talks about a possible export agreement with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, centering on Saab's Gripen fighter jets. Saab, a key player in defense manufacturing, is keen on this potential collaboration to strengthen its international presence.
Zelenskiy's visit follows a brief stop in Norway and underscores Ukraine's ongoing military procurement efforts amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Kristersson, during his discussion with Zelenskiy, confirmed the focus on one of the world's leading fighter jets, although he refrained from confirming a Gripen deal on the agenda that day.
While immediate Gripen donations are off the cards, discussions may pave the way for future Ukrainian defense enhancements. Ukrainian pilots have already been testing the Gripen in Sweden, indicating possible strides toward a future export deal. Both leaders are expected to share more at a joint press conference.
