Critical Negotiations in Gaza: A Quest for Lasting Peace
Qatari Prime Minister announces critical negotiations to consolidate the U.S.-backed truce in Gaza. Despite a pause in violence, a complete ceasefire is elusive without Israeli withdrawal. Trump's peace plan requires an international security force and interim Palestinian government, with complex talks ongoing.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani declared that the truce efforts in Gaza have reached a 'critical' stage. Speaking at the Doha Forum, he stressed that the current halt in hostilities is merely a pause, not a full ceasefire, lacking Israeli withdrawal and stable access to Gaza.
The diplomatic maneuvering revolves around U.S. President Donald Trump's peace initiative, which envisions establishing an interim technocratic Palestinian government. The plan also includes an international 'board of peace' supported by a security force. Negotiations on the specifics of this force and its mandate have been challenging.
Despite the truce, violence persists with Israeli forces continuing operations against Hamas targets. Both sides accuse each other of breaching the agreement. On Saturday, local reports indicated seven Palestinian deaths, including from drone strikes, while Israel confirmed neutralizing militants who breached truce lines.
