Lucknow's municipal corporation, led by Mayor Sushma Kharkwal, has intensified efforts to verify and evict undocumented foreign nationals, focusing on suspected Rohingya and Bangladeshi people. The campaign, which Kharkwal declared on Monday has been ongoing for over a year, seeks to safeguard the city by removing illegal occupants.
The mayor detailed instances where entire groups were swiftly cleared, emphasizing the importance of such actions in ensuring long-term security and compliance with laws. Kharkwal supports Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in his call for vigilance to identify infiltrators and insists on collaboration from media, citizens, and government entities for effective results.
This initiative is part of a broader state-wide operation, including setting up detention centers for undocumented foreigners, and extends internally within the municipal body. Kharkwal has already witnessed over 160 job resignations related to the drive and continues to make on-ground visits to verify activities, despite criticism.
